Mindset: Planting Seeds

This morning I did a little video recording of picking an ear of corn from my mini farm. One of my passions lately has been growing my own food. It is quite fulfilling and I suggest that everyone grows at least some of their own food. One lesson from the farm is about planting a seed. If you want to grow some corn like I did then the first step is to plant the seed. Just like in life the first step towards any new goal that you have is to first plant the seed. So what does that really mean? My goal at the end of the summer was to have some corn. So I had a goal with a specific end date to it. That is important to me. There is a quote by Elon Musk that has become pretty popular and it talks about taking your 10 year goals and doing it in 6 months. Now Elon is a very ambitious person just from an outside perspective. I’m not saying it is impossible to achieve this but I think Elon is trying to say that if you go after a 10 year goal with the mindset of completing it in 6 months. In 6 months, you’ll be much farther down the road rather than if you had in mind the goal could be accomplished in 10 years. It puts some urgency behind it. Makes you show up with an energy unknown to man kind as Coach Harbaugh used to say when I played for the Ravens. So once I planted my corn seeds and had this goal of getting some corn at the end of the season. The real fun began. Now it was time to nurture my seeds each day and help them grow. Now as a first time grower of corn it wasn’t very easy. To be honest, if it wasn’t for my farm mentor there is no way that I would have gotten any corn at all. That is another important lesson on a journey towards your goal. It is much easier to get where you are going when you have mentors and people that can guide you a little on the path. Just make sure those mentors are legit. Today everyone wants to be a mentor without really doing much of anything. Make sure you seek out the right mentor and people that can help you along the way. During my nurturing of the corn, I had to add more compost, water daily and make sure no pests where attacking my corn. It might seem silly that I am relating growing corn to big goals but it is very similar. The hardest part I would say is the 2nd month. Now corn takes about 90 days from planting to harvest so the 2nd month is right in the middle. Those are the days that you begin to forget the end goal of plucking that corn. You may let the weeds grow a little too much or forget to water one day. This all affects that end result. It is important when you are in the middle of your goals to remember that end goal. If you are able to keep that in mind it will help you keep going. Plucking that corn just like achieving that goal that may take 3 months is so fulfilling and worth it. I recommend that you set some fun goals and put an end date to it. It makes life a lot of fun when you are creating and working towards some of your passions. Keep Going!
